Two policemen found out that they are not above the law.
The former detective Warrant Officer Jan Maphanga (55) and Constable Sonjana Malatji (37) were sentenced by Middelburg Regional court on Friday October 27 for corruption.
Maphanga resigned in 2007 and Malatji was still working at Witbank SAPS.
The duo were convicted of soliciting a bribe of R5 000 from a complainant who was a victim of a house robbery in April 2007. They claimed that the money would be used to pay an informer to assist in the tracing of the victim’s vehicle which was stolen during the robbery.
The stolen vehicle, it transpired, was already recovered by local police and was kept at the station.
