Trial of accused serial rapist Cascar Nkosi begins in Middelburg

Affected families and activists rally in Middelburg as a long-awaited trial involving multiple counts of rape and kidnapping gets under way.

The Kwanele-Mama Foundation and affected families are still at their wits’ end in their fight for justice as the trial of Cascar Nkosi (39), accused of multiple cases of rape and kidnapping, is scheduled to begin today (October 19) at the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg.

This comes after the trial was moved after a postponement of the original May trial dates following the appointment of a new legal representative, who requested additional time to prepare and familiarise himself with the case.

One affected parent previously said: “We are happy that the trial has been moved to October instead of 2028 as was initially indicated. We are hoping for justice and a hefty sentence that will send a strong message so that we can also get closure and move on.”

Foundation chairperson Vinolia Mashiane previously said: “The foundation remains committed to ensuring that justice is neither delayed nor denied. We will continue to monitor the proceedings closely and advocate for transparency, accountability and the rights of survivors and affected communities.”

Nkosi faces 26 charges, including multiple counts of rape and kidnapping involving children aged between seven and 13, as well as a separate charge of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving his wife.

He was arrested in January 2025 while police were attending an unrelated assault case in Vosman. Police investigations later linked him to at least 10 reported cases of sexual assault and abduction across eMalahleni, Vosman and Mhluzi dating back to 2023.
