Eskom is not going to leave Emalahleni in the dark.
The utility giant responded to the Save Emalahleni campaign led by local attorney Mr Johan Coetzee and reconsidered their intended bulk electricity interruption.
“The decision by Eskom was taken for allowing them enough time to investigate some of the issues we raised in our submission. They indicated that direct engagements with us to discuss some of the issues, will be done in the future,” Coetzee said.
Coetzee said the provincial and national executives are accountable for the situation between Eskom and the Emalahleni Local Municipality. He insisted that they intervene in municipal affairs, but to date they have not given him any response.
He emphasised that the mandatory intervention into the municipal affairs is of the greatest importance for the municipality.
“Our high court application to compel the provincial and national executives to intervene will be served to the parties shortly.”
Coetzee suggested that the municipal council be dissolved and a panel of administrators with specific expertise be appointed.
“The municipality has lost the ability to self-correct its financial and management crisis. An intervention is the only remedy to nurse the municipality back to managerial and financial health.”
Because of the bad debt the municipality has with Eskom, they wanted to flick the switch on November 20. This would have left residents without electricity for eight hours a day.
