The festive season is a time to spend with family, but for some criminals it seems they might be behind bars these holidays.
On Tuesday, November 28 a duo aged 28 and 47 charged with fraud appeared in court. The pair was busted for their criminal activities by members of Mpumalanga Hawks and Crime Intelligence. They were arrested for purchasing vehicles online using fraudulent documents.
Vulendzani Bathasar Magwabeni (35) and Mumvudi Nicole Mukembu (42) were arrested for contravention of the medicine act. Magwabeni is a former optometrist who continued practicing as an optometrist after his licence had expired. At the same address as Magwabeni, Mukembu who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was found operating as a doctor without qualifications; she too was arrested and files were seized.
The arrest was made by members of Mpumalanga Serious Organised Crime Unit and the Department of Health.
Magwabeni and Mukembu appeared at the Witbank Magistrate Court on Thursday, November 23 and they were granted R1500 bail each. The case was postponed to Friday, December 15 for further investigations.
In Vosman Magistrate Court, Benedict Mathapo (57) was convicted on 270 counts of fraud. Mathapo was sentenced to six years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years and three years under correctional supervision.
The 57-year-old man defrauded SARS through e-filling on behalf of a civil servant official where in turn he received part of the cash from tax payers.
