“Please take note that municipal manhole covers have been stolen in Blancheville on the corner of Adela and First Avenue,” an alert of South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) stated on social media.
On November 25 another complaint came forward of manhole covers being stolen.
SACCW responders quickly secured the open manholes to make it more visible for road users.
This incident was reported to eMalahleni Local Municipality to replace the covers but in the meantime residents should be careful.
After further investigation it was found that these covers are being taken by drug users living on the streets.
“They steal the manhole covers for scrap metal to feed their addiction. The real problem is scrap metal businesses that buy municipality property from these thieves,” said Maureen Scheepers from SACCW.
