While residents across Emalahleni are constantly reminded of the ever growing Eskom debt, streetlights in nearly all the suburbs are burning day and night.
Eskom said that municipal street lights are charged on a business rate tariff in order for them to measure their consumption.
The municipality thus needs to manage the switching on and off of their street lights.

When asked how much is wasted in rands and cents, Eskom said the actual amounts may fluctuate from month to month, therefore it would be difficult to provide an average cost.
“The problem we have is the daylight switch, which we suspect it has been damaged in those street lights which are burning during the day. The daylight switch is supposed to automatically turn off the streetlights when there is sunlight. We have a schedule to service streetlights but when it is brought to our attention we attend to the malfunctioning streetlights as soon as possible,” said municipal spokesperson Mr Kingdom Mabuza.
On the other side of the coin residents are constantly complaining about street lights not working at night time.
“We have on more than one occasion asked the municipality to fix the streetlights in Jackaroo Park and Blancheville. Up to now we had no joy and of course no working streetlights,” residents in Ward 20 echoed.
