When can you be arrested for dagga?
The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) latest World Drug Report for 2019 notes that dagga is one of the most used drugs in South Africa
Drugs have taken over a lot of lives, not only in eMalahleni but all over the world too.
There is one drug that is so popular and very accessible and inexpensive that both old and young use either for medical purposes or recreational purposes.
This drug is dagga.
The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) latest World Drug Report for 2019 notes that dagga is one of the most used drugs in South Africa.
A high percentage of 56 percent of people in treatment mentioned dagga as their main drug.
Dagga is also the cheapest drug in the country, typically costs around R3 per gram and it can be grown by anyone anywhere.
This is what makes it accessible:
Since the legalisation of dagga in the country last year, people are going wild and feel so free to use it and carry it anywhere but there are exceptions to the rule.
Phola SAPS communications officer Constable Thabang Ntuli previously said that the legalisation of dagga has not been categorised under any law yet but people will be arrested if found in possession of dagga in public and if you smoke it in public.
The legalisation means that it can only be used at private spaces such at home and can have a limited amount at home.
It cannot be used or smoked in public places or be in possession of dagga when in a public space.
31 arrests related to drugs were made in the last week by Witbank Police officials.
21 of those arrests were of possession of dagga and seven for selling dagga.
Witbank SAPS communications officer Captain Eddie Hall said that people cannot sell dagga.
He added: “The law says that dagga can be used for personal use only and you must be 18 years and older to do so, but you cannot sell it.”
The situation is easy.
Rather stay at home and consume your little dagga.
Do not go around with it or try to sell it because you will be caught.
