“My inspiration is the Holy Spirit”

Many would know him as a shy pastors’ child but his sister “forced” him to take on singing because he has the voice to sing

God-given talents need to be nurtured and used to do what God said should be done and Pastor Nkosinathi Shongwe largely known as King Nathi is doing just that.

He has kept his head up high and took his singing talent to greater heights.

He said that gospel music chose him because of his family and his church background.

“I once tried to do jazz music but it didn’t work out. I went back to gospel music because I did not struggle to find my flow in that area.”

Pastor Nathi is a local gospel musician who started singing around the age of 13 years.

He was born in KwaMhlanga and bred in Klipfontein, eMalahleni.

Many would know him as a shy pastors’ child but his sister “forced” him to take on singing because he has the voice to sing.

He released his latest single in November 2018 titled “Ebukhoneni Bakhe”, which roughly translates to “in His presence.” “The song’s reception is amazing. I performed it for the first time in Durban and people loved it so much.”

The 30-year-old said that he gets his inspiration from the Holy Spirit.

“The relationship I have with God and the Holy Spirit and how vast is the love of God inspires my songs.”

He added: “Having a relationship with God also made me realize that Christianity is personal and not in the family. My first encounter with God was during a youth gathering. I take worship serious because it is what drew me to God on a personal level.”

He is working on his first album but said that he will be releasing a lot of singles so people should be on the lookout for those.

He explained that he has had good times on his musical journey.

“Highlights of my music journey would be when people would tell me that they have found healing and joy through my music. People love what I do and their testimonies are my highlight.”

Pastor Nathi said that getting into the gospel music industry takes a lot of work.

“People who are already in the industry are not welcoming towards new people. They tend to look down on new people whereas they should embrace each other and be welcoming.”

To motivate the youth who want to pursue a gospel music career, he said that one has to have a relationship with God.

“Have a relationship with God so that you can have direction, hold on to what God has said you should do and be yourself because being unique makes a space for you.”

If you would like to see Pastor Nathi in action, he will be at KwaMhlanga showground on Friday, November 15. For more information, check out his social media pages.
