Video: A ticking time tunnel

The hole goes under the road forming a tunnel, which light can be seen from one to the other

A hole was reported to have formed on the side of the national road N4 on Nelspruit direction, just before the KwaGuqa and Clewer off-ramp.

The hole goes under the road forming a tunnel, which light can be seen from one to the other.

TracN4 released a press statement on their Facebook page, stating that they like to advise the public that they are aware of severe infrastructure damage of the N4.

It continues to state the reason for the formation of the hole: “This is due to the theft of the steel lining in the pipe culverts which has resulted in erosion. TRAC has inspected the affected culverts and the relevant section of the road and would like to assure the public that the road is stable and not collapsing as has been rumoured.”

It is unknown when the hole started to form or when the steel linings in the culverts were stolen.

Several community organisations such as Vosman Police Station and KG Mall have raised safety concerns regarding the issue.

Vosman Deputy Station Commander, Colonel Moses Maepa, highlighted the safety of the drivers on the road.

“This hole needs to be attended to as soon as possible before the road sinks and causes accidents.”

KG Mall general manager, Mr Piegie Mthembu added that some people may get attracted to go inside the hole.

“I see a lot of people passing by the hole every day. Some might get attracted to get inside the hole and get trapped.”

In TracN4’s statement, it is stated that major repair work will commence soon.

“The infrastructure along the N4 Toll Route continues to be severely affected by theft and malicious damage which we strongly condemn. Such actions not only result in the company incurring unnecessary costs, but also have a negative impact on the road’s maintenance and traffic flow.”

TracN4 would like to encourage the public to report crimes against TRAC and infrastructure to Whistle Blower Hotline on 082 900 2447.
