Video: Cataracts have taken over Lefa’s sight
Lefa was diagnosed with congenital cataracts and was put on a waiting list to have them removed
A young boy needs help to be able to see normally again, but unfortunately funds are needed to make this possible.
Lefa Mankgaba (6) was born in Witbank Provincial Hospital in 2013, he was a healthy baby and as he grew up in front of his mother Nthabiseng Mankgaba.
Lefa used to play in the streets and really enjoyed playing with his friends, just like any child would.
Then in the beginning of last year his mom noticed that Lefa was battling to see and he was straining his eyes to see.
That is when Nthabiseng took her son to Steve Banto Biko Hospital where she was then referred to Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit.
Lefa was diagnosed with congenital cataracts and was put on a waiting list to have them removed.
Nthabiseng then took Lefa to Execuspecs in Highveld Mall to see an optometrist.
“I brought Lefa here to the optometrist as he wanted glasses to see better,” said Ntabiseng.
The optometrist Hasina Ehrahim then had a look in his eyes and she confirmed congenital cataracts.
“Very little light enters into his eyes and therefore he can’t see clearly, it’s a treatable form of blindness,” said Hasina.
Lefa is currently in grade one in Kwa-Guqa Primary School, even though the school year has just started he is battling to see on the black board.
“It will help so much if he can get this operation done as soon as possible, he is still young and has his whole school career ahead of him,” said Nthabiseng.
For now the only way forward is surgery to remove the cataracts.
Hasina is speaking to Dr John Graham to see how much the surgery will cost.
Once that is done another article will be placed in the newspaper informing the public.
