Train hits rushing truck

According to witnesses, the truck driver miscalculated the speed of his truck, he had thought that he will make it and unfortunately the train was already too close

Accidents happen every day due to reckless driving, but this is an act that can be prevented.

On Sunday, July 19 a truck was hit by a train on the railway crossing the R544 road near ‘Pap en Vleis’.

According to witnesses, the truck driver miscalculated the speed of his truck, he had thought that he will make it and unfortunately the train was already too close.

It is also alleged that the train sounded the horn three times as per standard operating procedure when approaching the railway crossing but the truck was unfortunate that he was not fast enough to cross.

The driver was injured and taken to hospital, there was also another passenger with the driver, allegedly the passenger past away on the scene.

The scene of the railway accident.

Drivers are advised when approaching a railway to slow down, look both ways and proceed if your entire vehicle can clear the railroad crossing.

If a train approaches, stop at least 15 feet from the nearest rail.

Trains are three feet wider than the tracks on both sides.

Also do not try and drive around lowered gates, saving a few minutes is not worth risking your life.
