Candlelight in honour of the late executive mayor
Municipal employees placed wreaths at the Malatjie home in Tasbet in honour of the late mayor Cllr Linah Malatjie and her husband Mr Esau Malatjie.
Emalahleni employers decided that the best way to send their farewell to the late mayor and her husband was to organise a candlelight ceremony at the municipality building and a wreath-laying ceremony at their residence in Tasbet Park.
The ceremonies were held on Friday, January 7.
The couple Mrs Linah Masellane and Mr Essau Sepetlele Malatjie died in a road accident on Monday, January 3.
Both the personal drivers and bodyguards said they will always share the good memories they have with the late executive mayor who was always humble and supportive. They believe that God is in control of everything and they hope that they rest in peace.
The manager of the Transversal Unit in the office of the executive mayor Ms Phindile Nkosi said her first day when she was hired, the mayor told her that her passion for work was the reason she was hired. Remembering how passionate the mayor was about her duties, it was not difficult to understand what she was talking about.
Mr John Sikhosana who also works at the office of the executive mayor pointed out that he only has good memories of the mayor. “She was so supportive to each and every one of us. We need to take forward her legacy and carry on where she left off. At a young age, she uses to excel in sports like javelin, shot put, softball and athletics. She was very much focused; she had a vision and was very fit. She possessed the strength and was very skilled and was ready to serve, not to be served. We hope we will keep on driving and pull through the storm.”
Mr Mike Lelaka said the mayor was a visionary and beacon of hope and brought hope to the hopeless and home to the homeless. He said the mayor wanted to see the lives of the people of the city to be improved.
Ms Trudy Xhala-Mavimbela presented a poem in her honour and said that the mayor was accessible to everybody and had time for everyone and was a good listener.
Municipal manager Mr Sizwe Mayisela said after hearing about the accident he could not believe his ears. He said he phoned his drivers to find out where they were, only to find that they were both not driving and instructed them to fetch her children and take them to hospital, after that a call came to say that the mayor and later her husband had passed away.
Mayisela said it is very hard to come to terms with what had happened. He added to say as difficult as it is we need to commit ourselves to serve and to follow in her footsteps.
Messages of support were received from other workers and organisations as well.
