Emalahleni Fire and Rescue were quick to respond to the fire that broke out in a home in Die Heuwel.

Although it is unclear what may have caused the fire, there is speculation that it started at the generator as it was load-shedding and switched on during this time.

According to the caretaker the owner supposedly turned on the generator in his garage when the power cuts started, “As usual when the power goes off, we switched on the generator. Shortly after the power came back and when it did, I suppose it came back with force and resulted in the fire,” he said.

The caretaker also alleges that the victim’s valuable goods caught fire in the garage as well as the generator that he used to keep the lights on during load-shedding.

Another source told WITBANK NEWS that he and his family were attending a bible study session in Beyers Street on Tuesday, May 9 when the fire broke out.

“My daughter went to the bathroom outside and she ran back inside to report that there was a fire at one of the houses. Although we as the community are happy with the fire department’s response, I am unhappy with the level of preparedness they had. The fire truck did not have sufficient water and they struggled a little whilst the fire continued to break,” said the source.

WITBANK NEWS reached out to Emalahleni Local Municipality and is still waiting for a reply.

No one was harmed when the fire broke out and fortunately, none of the victim’s vehicles caught fire.
