City of Coal under siege: Carjacking epidemic sparks fear

Minister of Police Bheki Cele releases shocking crime stats, highlighting eMalahleni's car hijacking crisis

The City of Coal is reeling under the weight of a relentless surge in car hijacking incidents, unleashing a reign of terror that’s left residents and authorities on edge.

With not one but two spine-chilling cases back-to-back, eMalahleni is grappling with an alarming rise in violent crime that demands immediate attention.

Under the cloak of darkness on Friday, August 18 at 19:15, KwaGuqa Extension 12 was transformed into a scene of horror.

According to reports, the complainant faced a trio of masked suspects whose intentions were as clear as the firearm they wielded. The suspect pointed the weapon at the victim.

The red Polo, sporting Malawian plates, was seized in a heartbeat, but it was only the beginning.

Terror followed, as the assailants didn’t just steal a vehicle but shattered a sense of security.

Cellphones, cash, bank cards, sneakers, a jacket, and irreplaceable documents were snatched.

On the same day at 17:30, Empumelelweni Extension 9  another spine-chilling carjacking occurred. According to reports, the victim, behind the wheel of a white Toyota double cab GD6, was ambushed by three suspects.

A firearm-driven confrontation unfolded as the attackers forced the victim to surrender the vehicle.

An intense search followed, culminating in the theft of personal effects—a cellphone, wallet, a vital medical aid card, and a driver’s license.

As eMalahleni grapples with these harrowing incidents, it’s the broader context that drives home the urgency.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele’s crime statistics unveil a shocking 206.7% surge in carjacking incidents, painting a grim reality.

The unsettling numbers have vaulted from 15 reported cases in quarter one of 2022 to a staggering 46 in quarter one of 2023.
