Ethiopian Church’s 40-day fast fuels community unity and compassion

In the heart of eMalahleni, an inspiring display of dedication and compassion recently unfolded as the Ethiopian Church embarked on a 40-day fasting initiative, extending its support to the community.

This remarkable endeavour carried out under the banners of “Christ for All Mission and Mobilization” and “Ethiopian Church South Africa,” culminated in a heartfelt donation of essential supplies and a powerful demonstration of unity that transcends cultural boundaries.

Guided by Saika Shamibo, a respected church elder and successful businessperson, the Ethiopian Church embarked on a journey that seamlessly intertwined faith, selflessness, and community care.

The fasting period, which spanned from May 31 to July 9, became a period of unwavering commitment as congregants refrained from breakfast and lunch; channelling the resources they saved to assist the community.

Saika, a driving force behind this initiative, shared, “Our fasting and savings practice is a tangible embodiment of our faith and our love for our fellow community members. It’s a sincere effort to provide aid to those who need it.

”For 40 days, church members selflessly sacrificed daily meals to offer their support to their neighbours, regardless of their own modest means. This collective effort became a heart-warming symbol of goodwill and unity.”

As the fasting period drew to a close, the Ethiopian Church was well-prepared to turn their dedication into practical assistance.

The culmination of their efforts translated into a donation that benefited 300 individuals within the communities.

The formal presentation of these donations took place at the Emalahleni Local Municipality on Monday, August 28, serving as a poignant reminder of the power of unity and compassion.

Saika emphasised, “Our congregation’s sacrifice was a genuine commitment to making a positive impact.”

”A local beneficiary expressed their gratitude, saying, “The Ethiopian Church’s selflessness and care exemplify the strength of community and compassion. We are deeply touched by their unwavering support, which strengthens the bond between our communities.

The municipality also expressed appreciation for the initiative’s profound impact on the community.
