Armed robberies becoming common in eMalahleni

Victim allegedly wakes up in a daze in CBD after robbery hijacking.

Five cases of armed robberies have been reported in the past week.

Bringing the Wild West right to our doorstep, as it appears that every robber now has a firearm at the ready.
Alarming cases of armed robberies have consistently taken place throughout the city.

Innocent victims targeted have to endure staring down the barrel of a gun with fear.
On Thursday, September 7, the victim alleged that he was walking in Frans Quass Avenue, Del Judor when a Nissan NP300 vehicle stopped next to him.
The victim said that the vehicle had three occupants, all wearing security uniforms.
The occupants then allegedly asked him for directions.

They then offered him a lift, as both the occupants of the vehicle and the victim were heading in the same direction.

Upon getting in the vehicle, the occupants allegedly demanded that the victim hand over his belongings.

The victim said that everything then went fuzzy, and he passed out, believing that the suspects drugged him.

The victim said he woke up in the Central Business District (CBD) and was left unharmed.
On Monday, September 11 two armed robberies took place.
A delivery driver told police he was going about his normal day when suddenly two hands grabbed his throat from behind, strangling him.

The driver said he saw a man coming from the front with a firearm in hand.

The armed robber allegedly pointed the firearm at the driver’s forehead, demanding valuables.
The robbers managed to get away with the victim’s cellphone and motorbike, valued at R40 000.
Another armed robbery, also taking place on Monday, September 11 is eerily similar to the previous case, but this time the robbers drove in a silver Polo TSI.
The victim alleges that he was waiting for his lift to arrive in Klipfontein when the vehicle with three occupants stopped beside him, offering him a lift. The victim made the mistake of assuming nothing was out of the ordinary and got in the vehicle.

It was then that he had a firearm allegedly pointed at him. The victim was then forced to hand over his power bank (charger), wallet, iPhone cellphone, and laptop.

The victim alleges that he was dropped off in Duvha Park, instructing him to get out and run or else he would be shot.

Luckily, the victim was physically unharmed.
The victim later recounted those moments saying that it was his first time being robbed.

“I had to give them my PINs and although I had only R5 in my bank account, the robbers saw it fit to reverse my debit orders. Funds were then withdrawn at a local bank teller in Jackaroo Park,” the victim who wishes to remain anonymous said.

He also added that the whole ordeal happened in a time frame of 30 minutes.

“People keep on telling me that I should have tried to run away but when you have a gun pointed at you, you just freeze,” concluded the victim.

Tuesday, September 12 saw another armed robbery in the city.
A resident was left without his jacket after the robbery occurred.

The victim claims that he was sitting in his stationary Ford Ranger when he was approached by two unknown men.
The victim told police one of the suspects was allegedly armed.

One of the robbers continued to allegedly threaten the victim and took his jacket. The two suspects then fled in a white Audi.

No gunshots were fired, and the victim was left unharmed.
Last but not least, on Thursday, September 14 one robber took his chance by robbing an armed civilian at the bank.

The victim alleged that he had been at the bank to withdraw money. Upon returning to his vehicle, he noticed a man hiding behind his vehicle.

As he approached, the suspect allegedly threatened him with the firearm.

Having no choice but to comply, the victim was robbed of R8 000, two cellphones, his car keys, and his 9mm pistol.
Investigations are still ongoing into all these cases.
