Khonzimfundo Primary learners : ‘Police are our friends’
The main aim for the day was to ensure the learners that the police are their friends and are there to help.
Learners from the Khonzimfundo Primary School in Ackerville were treated to a fun day out.
The school saw it only fit that they stop at the Witbank Police Station.
On Friday, September 15 before heading off to the park for a fun picnic, the learners took a stroll at the police station learning all about how the process works, from booking to the cells and even the kitchen where inmates’ daily meals are prepared.
The school principal, Alice Gopi, said that the school consisting of 500 learners decided to give the Grade one to Grade three learners a tour of the facilities.

“We would like to educate our learners on what happens to a person going through the system and how the police go about their daily shifts. It has been an interesting and informative day so far. We would also like to thank everybody at Witbank Police Station for allowing us and making us feel welcome,” said Gopi.
Captain Eddie Hall said that the day aimed to make sure that learners knew who to call when in need and recited the 10111 number with the learners using a one-hand system, making it easier to remember.
“We want to teach the children not to fear the police and to feel safe. Children should be aware that we are here to help them, that we care, and that they can approach us whenever in need of assistance in emergencies. We took the learners all around the building, from the front desk where reports are made and even the cells where the suspects will sleep after being caught,” said Hall.
