Do you think Mandela Day is a holiday? Think again

No day off, just 67 minutes of service.

As July 18th approaches, many people have been caught off guard, believing that Mandela Day grants them a day off. Social media is flooded with posts from people realising their errors.

Mandela Day, celebrated every year, honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa and a global icon of peace and reconciliation. The day encourages individuals to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to community service reflecting the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for social justice.

So, while you’ll still need to show up at work on Thursday, you can honour Nelson Mandela by dedicating 67 minutes to community service. Just don’t expect a lie-in.
