eMalahleni baker creates a sphere where art and pastry meets
Bongane Mononyane whisks up imagination as he greets every day with a joyful spirit and mouth-watering treats.
In the bustling suburb of Klipfontein, where sunrise paints the sky with hues of gold, a mystical figure emerges. Bongane Mononyane, the baker, weaves his culinary magic, entrancing the hearts and taste buds of eMalahleni’s residents.
In a world ravaged by the dark forces of Covid-19, Bongane’s job vanished like mist in the morning dew in 2021.
Yet, from the ashes of adversity, a hero arose. With a twinkle in his eyes and a whisk in his hand, he conjured a bakery of wonder.
“In the beginning, when I started selling my baked goods, I realised I need to up my game to get the attention of cars driving past me, that is when inspiration struck,” he said of his idea to dress up.
As night’s veil lifts, he shuffles into his kitchen in Extension 14, where his baking secrets await, that he learned watching his sister bake before deciding to perfect his own baking craft. In the early morning hours he mixes, kneads, and bakes, infusing his creations with love, laughter, and stardust.
Scones, biscuits, muffins, and fold-overs – each a testament to his love for his family and filling hungry tummies.
With dawn’s arrival, he dons his enchanted attire, a cloak of many colours, transforming into the character he has chosen for the day – and acts out his role to perfection as per his costume each day. His smile, a ray of sunlight, illuminates the streets as he peddles his magical treats.
Residents, drawn by the aroma of freshly baked wonders, gather around.
Cars halt, horns hooting in support and admiration of his wonderful outfits, as drivers succumb to Bongane’s charms. His outfits, a spectacle of whimsy, leave onlookers smiling with delight.
“I decided to start dressing up to interact with my customers. As an entrepreneur, one has to come up with new and innovative ideas. My customers love it, except they say I wear out their hooters,” he commented further, his huge smile never wavering.
The Scone Sorcerer, aware of the village’s weekend weary heads, grants a brief reprieve. He sleeps in, his baking schedule adjusted to accommodate the collective hangover of eMalahleni.
“On Mondays, I get to sleep in a bit, because most people in eMalahleni have babbelas on a Monday, so I can start my sales slightly later,” he says with a hearty chuckle.
Love, laughter, and a pinch of magic – the mantra guiding his craft.
His 19-month-old princess, the spark that ignites his heart, inspires every batch.
Whispers spread of Bongane’s mystical scones, imbuing those who partake with joy, vitality, and an unshakeable sense of wonder. His baked goods and warm smile, a beacon of hope, shines bright in Klipfontein’s suburbs – and you can be part of the magic every morning in Gasel Street.
