Reservoirs still too empty to return water to normal
The DA wants immediate intervention to solve the water crisis.
Dry taps is the topic of all conversations in the City of Coal.
This is the latest update from the municipality about the reservoir levels
- Point A approximately 33%
- Point B approximately 24%
- Point B-C approximately 30%
- Point C approximately 11%
- Point D approximately 17%
The isolated areas will remain isolated until midday tomorrow.
“These challenges have reached critical levels, leaving residents frustrated and without essential services,” said Clive Hatch constituency chairman of the DA.
The party submitted a formal letter to the office of the speaker and the municipal manager, requesting an urgent special council sitting to address these pressing issues.
Here is a brief outline of the concerns:
Water shedding crisis:
Large areas of the city are being deprived of water, with supply being isolated in one part of the municipality to feed other areas that have been without water for prolonged periods.
This unsustainable practice is especially devastating during the current heatwave, leaving many households without access to water when they need it most.
No waste collection
Streets are now littered with uncollected waste, creating an environmental and health hazards.
“The municipality’s waste management department has completely failed to deliver on its mandate, with refuse collections falling far behind schedule,” Hatch said.
Despite numerous efforts by DA Ward Councillors to obtain updates and provide feedback to the community, their requests have been met with silence by municipal leadership.
“This disregard for community representatives is unacceptable and undermines the very principles of accountability and transparency,” Hatch lashed out.
Witbank News reached out to the municipality to get an indication if the special council meeting will be considered and a time and date.
Mr Lebo Mofokeng, municipal spokesperson acknowledged that the request was received and said he will give more information about the special council meeting on Monday.
