Emalahleni Local Municipality investigate sand dust dumping in Die Heuwel

Residents in the area said they have been suffering from serious sinuses, headaches, sore throat, and coughing problems.

Die Heuwel residents were up in arms over the continuous black sand dust dumping, which has left them sick and turned their swimming pools green.

On Friday, December 6, the homes of several residents in the area were clouded with what seemed to be black sand dust that had been dumped.

What looked like smoke of some sort filled the air, leaving residents fearing for their health.

One resident cried that quite a large number of people in the area have been suffering from serious sinuses, headaches, sore throat, and coughing problems.

Residents also accused a company in the area of dumping black sand dust from the furnaces.

“Now I want to know if are they going to take responsibility for my pool going green and for the cancer this is going to cause to Die Heuwel residents,” the resident cried.

More residents shared their health concerns which they alluded were due to the consistent dust dumping a company operating nearby.

“I’ve lived in the Modelpark/Highveld Park for 25 years. So I’m used to eMalahleni dust. But we moved to this area recently and the amount of black dust settling in our homes, daily, is scary,” another resident mentioned.

“Our homes are permanently covered in a film of filthy dust and it’s becoming untenable. My husband has frequent problems with sinus and a chest closing up,” another resident cried.

“My wife has also had sinus and chest problems lately, so much that she has required oxygen,” another resident cried.

“The company is dumping in the area below their factory next to the high school property. They should have dust suppression systems in place when they dump high dust content materials,” One resident advised.
