Crash and dash
Driver’s alleged desperate bid for freedom after SUV smashes through wall.

A serene afternoon in a Louise Street townhouse complex was brutally shattered when a white Citroën SUV came crashing through the perimeter wall, unleashing a trail of destruction that left two vehicles and a carport in ruins.
On Sunday, January 19, at 16:00, the driver, who allegedly sped through the stop street in Sophia Street, sent the vehicle soaring through the air after hitting the pavement, slamming into the wall with bone-jarring force.
As the dust settled, Bophelo Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and assessed the driver. Afterward, the driver allegedly made a shocking bid for freedom, desperately trying to escape the consequences of his actions.
He allegedly attempted to flee through the gate, only to allegedly be thwarted by residents, before allegedly daring to leap over the wall and sprint to a silver Nissan Juke, where a man allegedly drove him away from the scene.
Allegedly, when confronted by onlookers as he was running, the driver allegedly claimed he was injured and being taken to the hospital, despite the presence of paramedics and an ambulance being on the scene.
In a heart-stopping climax, a coordinated effort by the SACCW and concerned citizens allegedly tracked the driver to a nearby house further down Louise Street, where he was allegedly finally cornered.
SAPS arrived and entered the premises, but in a stunning twist, allegedly no arrests were made, and the driver was not taken to the hospital, leaving the community stunned and seeking justice, and wondering how a driver could allegedly leave the scene of an accident and not be arrested.
SAPS returned to the house with an ambulance, but both the ambulance and the officers allegedly left the house again, with the driver allegedly not being taken to hospital or arrested.
“Everything could have been so much worse if children were playing in that complex. The extent of the damage is still to be determined as two cars got damaged, the carport and the perimeter wall,” commented SACCW member, Frik van Dyk.
Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall explained why the car driver was not arrested:
“The driver was not present on the scene, and the police were informed that he was at a house in Del Judor. SAPS went out to the house and found a family member of the driver who showed the police the driver, who was lying on the floor and needed medical attention. The police members called the ambulance who arrived at the scene and treated the driver and then left the house. The driver’s family was requested to go to the station and open an accident report as soon as the driver is able to do so.”
