Man robbed of cellphone while sleeping in car

Cellphone stolen, man left stranded.

A local man had fallen victim to an armed robbery after waking up to find his cellphone stolen from his car.

According to the police reports, on January 30, the complainant alleges that he had been sleeping in his vehicle when he was awoken to discover that his cellphone, which had been left on the car seat, was missing.

After finding out his cellphone was missing, the complainant further explained that he had exited his car and approached people in the surrounding area, asking about the whereabouts of his stolen phone.

Suddenly, one of the individuals he had spoken to claimed to have information about the stolen phone and offered to take the complainant to the suspect.

According to the complainant, he was driven around by the man who claimed to have information, who eventually picked up another individual, described as a friend.

At a later stage, the two men allegedly threatened the complainant, ordering him to exit the vehicle and leaving him in an unknown place with no car and cellphone.

Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police gave these tips: “Avoid being alone in a vehicle when traveling at night. Do not stop around hijacking spots or in any secluded area. Always be alert when driving. If you suspect you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS Emergency Number 10111. Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, drinking, and driving. Increase caution at intersections; always keep a look-out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.”
