More and more substations in eMalahleni are targeted by copperthieves

Suspects made off with expensive copper from a local substation in eMalahleni.

A security guard was held hostage and tied up with wire during a daring theft at a local substation in Tasbet Park.

According to the reports, the incident occurred on February 9, at approximately 00:25.

The guard spotted four men inside the yard while he was on duty. As he approached them, the men allegedly held him at gunpoint and took him to the guardroom, where they tied him up.

With th esecurity guard unable to alert anyone, the men allegedly stole copper cable valued at thousands of rands.

“Witbank SAPS have noticed an increase in business robberies, specifically at smaller businesses in town. The police request small businesses to implement preventative measures against business robberies. Controlled entrances are important in preventing overcrowding on your premises; make sure you have measures in place to restrict movement at entrances and exits to your business for both staff and customers,” said spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police Station.
