Dignity for girls in need
Glencore’s generous donation of 97 000 sanitary towels is changing the lives of thousands of girls in South African schools
A recent donation by Glencore has brought hope and dignity to thousands of girls in South African schools.
The company has provided 97 000 sanitary towels to schools in Mpumalanga, North West, and Limpopo, promoting girls’ education and empowerment.
The donation is part of Glencore’s Khululeka Sanitary Towel Programme and Sanitary Dignity Campaign Drive, initiatives to provide young girls with the confidence and security to manage their menstrual cycles without fear or shame.
Khomotjo Mashiane, community manager at Glencore Coal South Africa, said “We refuse to accept a world where young girls are denied their future simply because of their biology. Through our initiatives, we are not only providing sanitary towels, but we are also restoring confidence, hope, and dignity to the young girls.”
Mashiane emphasised that the initiative removes the periodic hygiene worry for many learners, allowing them to focus on their studies throughout the year.

Louis Snyman, group manager of Human Rights, Cultural Heritage, and Community Health at Glencore Ferroalloys, noted that the initiative had a significant impact on the girls who received the sanitary towels. “We successfully delivered the Sanitary Dignity for All bags, and while we couldn’t reach everyone in need, the impact on those individuals was significant and meaningful.”
Snyman also highlighted the importance of the partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority, which engaged with the girls on the topic of sexual harassment and emphasised the importance of reporting such incidents.
