Kasi football league pays tribute to late mayor with successful tournament

The late Lina Malatji was remembered through a soccer and netball tournament hosted in Lynnville on Human Rights Day.

In what has become a culture, the Kasi Football League hosted the third soccer and netball tournament in respect of the late mayor Linah Malatji.

To remember and celebrate the great works that Linah did for the league and the community of eMalahleni at large, the league committee decided to always honour her through what she knew them for, sports.

Combining it with the Human Rights Day celebration on March 21, they held another successful tournament for the U15 netball and U17 soccer at Lynnville Stadium.

The tournament brought together eight local teams in both netball and soccer, with Ackerville United, NSSD Fc, Overline United, Moonchester Fc, Viking Fc, Young Talent Fc, Coronation Fc, and Sunrise Sports, competing in soccer, and the Future Stones NC, Golden Stars NC, Smart Shooters NC, Sbobo Ladies NC, Future Stars NC, Lebo Stars NC, Young Talent NC, and the Mighty Rangers NC, competing on the netball club.

Lerato Ndala, Nolwazi Nkosi, Angel Msane, Minenhle Budaza, Londeka Managua, Faith Ndala, and Sphesihle Mnguni.

Young Talent won the final round against Overline United, making them soccer champions of the day, whereas Future Stars lifted the netball cup after winning against Sbobo Ladies in the finals.

Sipho Themba, a representative of the league, emphasised the support they received from Linah, “She supported us since 2016 when the league started. She used to support our games not just with her presence, but also with funding,” he said, adding that Linah’s top priority was to keep the youth busy so that they could be away from drugs.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors, players, the Malatji family, and the community of eMalahleni for their overwhelming support,” Sipho said.

According to Sipho, the tournament was a great success, and they will remain committed to honoring Linah’s memory and continuing her work in promoting sports development and community empowerment, even for the years to come.

Betty Kekana, sister of the late Linah, said, “We are excited to see Linah’s spirit live on because even though she is no more, this proves that her tireless efforts to uplift the community are still remembered.”
