Hundreds of flying insects invade eMalahleni

Residents said they had never seen so many locusts, it turned out not to be locusts - but meadow katydids (Conocephalus sp).

First, it was an outbreak of the African armyworm, now hundreds of flying green that look like locusts have residents ‘swarming’ social media.

These flying ‘goggos’ turn out to be meadow katydids (Conocephalus sp.).

They are attracted to lights at night and are often seen in areas with more than usual rain.
