Suspected card scammers busted – angry community turns their car upside down

The community turned the car upside down and beat the men suspected of card cloning at Saveways Centre.

The incident yesterday when the community stopped a suspected card-cloning gang from getting away, attracted a lot of attention.

Community members turned a car on its roof and beat three men after an alarm was raised by a woman whose card was cloned at Saveways Centre.

The centre’s security manager, Steven Fourie, explained that they were aware of card scammers operating at the centre.

In a pro-active response, they placed undercover guards at strategic points to keep an eye out for any suspicious activities.

“One of the guards at Capitec Bank noticed two men standing very close to a woman trying to draw money. She looked uncomfortable and the guard approached her to offer assistance. That was when she realised her card was cloned and the two men made off in a hurry,” Fourie said.

The security guards caught up with the men who jumped into a getaway car. In their haste to flee, the driver reversed into a parked vehicle.

The community saw the commotion, came closer, turned the car upside down, and started assaulting the men.

All three men were arrested and handed over to police.

“Our commitment to ensure a safe and crime-free environment is our top priority. We encourage anyone who requires assistance while at the shopping centre, to contact us immediately to escort them if they feel unsafe,” Fourie said.
