Cable thieves poison dogs to silence them while ‘hustling’

Councillor Karien McDermid issued a media statement urging public vigilance following reports of thieves allegedly poisoning animals that alert to their presence during cable thefts.

A string of disturbing incidents has rocked the quiet streets of Gerda and Mona in Model Park, leaving residents reeling after brazen cable thieves struck during the early hours, not only stripping Telkom lines from behind homes but also allegedly poisoning dogs to silence any alert.

The thefts reportedly occurred around 03:00.

According to residents, the criminals operated swiftly and methodically, targeting the Telkom lines behind adjacent properties.

In an act that has shocked the community, both neighbours’ dogs died, believed to have been poisoned by the thieves to prevent them from alerting homeowners.

“These criminals are getting bolder,” one resident lamented. “They move under the cover of darkness and know exactly what they’re after. But to kill animals just to make their job easier, that’s just cruel and unforgivable.”

In response to the growing alarm, Ward Councillor Karien McDermid warns the residents, strongly condemning the acts and calling for immediate community action.

“These incidents pose a significant risk to the safety and well-being of our community members, particularly our children and pets,” McDermid stated. “I urge everyone to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities without hesitation.”

The councillor also emphasised the importance of collaboration between residents and law enforcement, pledging to monitor the situation closely and explore sustainable solutions to prevent future incidents.

With safety at the forefront, residents are encouraged to install floodlights, review security camera footage, and report any unusual behaviour.
