Ward 33 residents demand an end to water shortages
The residents have launched a petition that will run until July 10, demanding a solution to the water crisis.
Residents of Ward 33, which includes Extension 16 and Reyno Ridge Extension 5, are fed up with the persistent water shortages that have plagued their community for years.
The residents, led by Ward 33 Councillor Kim Fourie of the DA, have launched a petition that will run until July 10, demanding a solution to the water crisis.
On June 26, the DA conducted a water outage picket and petition signing at Reyno Ridge Extension 5, where residents gathered to voice their frustrations. In one spirit, the residents emphasised that water is life, and they want their voices to be heard.
“We are putting our foot down and saying we want water,” Fourie said, adding that they refuse to continue to live without this basic necessity.
According to Fourie, the water shortages often result in days of no water for the community due to the insufficient capacity of Point C Reservoir, which is unable to maintain the right water levels to supply residents.
In a recent incident that saw the residents having to live without water for more than three days, the water eventually returned, but some households still complain that the pressure is very low.
“The water pressure is the main issue now,” the residents complained, adding that they are fed up with the situation and are demanding action from the municipality.
In their petition they stated that they call on the municipality to devise a solution to the water problems of Ward 33, namely Extension 16 and Reyno Ridge Extension 5, ensure that Point C Reservoir has enough capacity to supply all residents, and to develop a general strategy to address the water problems of the community in Ward 33.
Witbank News reached out to the municipal spokesperson, Lebo Mofokeng, on the matter, but there has been no response yet.
