Woman allegedly raped after leaving door unlocked

The police urge the public always to keep their doors and windows locked when inside the house.

A night turned into a nightmare for a woman who slept with an unlocked door at her house in expectation of her sister, only to welcome a stranger who allegedly raped her.

According to the police, the woman said that on July 12, before midnight, she was sleeping in her house in Springvalley with her door unlocked, as she expected her sister to return when the nightmare unfolded.

She said she was awakened by the opening of the door, only to wake up to a man standing next to her bed.

The woman was reportedly threatened to keep quiet, and the man allegedly forced himself on her.

fter that, he left, allowing the victim a chance to run to a neighbour, whom it is said he recognised the man.

In the morning, the victim went with her sister to the man’s house, as directed by the neighbour, to ask for her cellphone that he allegedly left with, only to have him dispute the allegations.

Strangely, two men reportedly came to the victim later to return the phone, claiming they had been sent by the same man they had confronted earlier.

The police are continuing with the investigation into the case.

Spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS, Captain Eddie Hall, encourages the public to always keep doors and windows locked when inside the house.

“To prevent rape, especially in your home, keep your house secured and don’t open your door to strangers without verifying identity,” he said, adding that people should also be aware of their surroundings, especially when alone, and trust their instincts if they feel unsafe.
