Tragic weekend claims lives in eMalahleni taxi accidents

Police investigations into the causes of the accidents are still underway.

The eMalahleni community is mourning after three taxi accidents happened over the weekend, leaving four people dead and many others injured.

The first accident happened on Friday, July 18, in Middelburg. A Sprinter minibus and a Quantum taxi crashed into each other.

According to reports, three people died instantly – two men and one woman, aged between 33 and 43. They were passengers in the taxis. At least 14 people were seriously injured, including one driver. Three others had minor injuries.

In the second accident, a taxi driver crashed into a tree. He died on the scene. There were no other injuries reported from the accident. The accident occurred on the R455 Verena Road on July 20, and Witbank Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

On the same day, the third accident occurred near Middelburg, where elderly and younger people were reported to have sustained no visible injuries. They were transported to Witbank Hospital.

“Everything happened so fast, the car rolled before it stopped. No one died in the accident, though others felt minor pains,” Sibongile Puwane, a resident of eMalahleni who was a passenger, said.

Reports further indicated that reckless and negligent driving could not be ruled out.

The community remains in shock, questioning their safety on the road as the causes of other accidents remain unknown.
