Court postpones case of man accused of burning 2 women in Kwa-Guqa

The accused remains in custody as his case is postponed for further investigation.

A man accused of burning two women inside a room in Kwa-Guqa extensions appeared before the Witbank Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed.

The 35-year-old made his first court appearance on July 29 and remains in custody, as his case has been postponed to August 7 for a formal bail application.

He was arrested last week after allegedly setting his girlfriend, Nompumelelo Gumede, and his own sister on fire during a domestic dispute on July 23.

According to Vinolia Mashiane from Kwanele Mama Foundation, the suspect allegedly poured petrol into the room where the duo were, set it alight, and left them locked in to burn.

“They burned until the neighbours came, and that was when he also attempted to help in rescuing them,” Mashiane said.

The women were rushed to the clinic, where they reportedly explained what happened, revealing the person responsible, before passing out.

They were then transported to the hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where they continue to fight for their lives.
