Phola SAPS and partners educate people with disabilities on their rights

They imparted the people in Tholulwazi Centre with knowledge that will sustain them in the long run.

Phola SAPS, in partnership with the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison, recently hosted an awareness campaign for people living with disabilities at Tholulwazi Centre.

Led by Phola station commander Lt Col Johannes Frederick Viviers, the event on July 24 was aimed at educating people with disabilities about their rights, also guaranteeing their safety, ensured by the police and other parties such as the Department of Social Development, and the Department of Health, among others.

The event also featured various stakeholders such as Busisiwe Ngoma and Thelma Mnguni from the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison, the Phola Community Policing Forum (CPF), and the Phola SAPS Youth Desk members.

Viviers stressed that policing methods are responsive to the needs of individuals with disabilities, whether as victims or suspects. He added that every interaction with them is carried out with respect and dignity, safeguarding their rights and recognising their fundamental value.

The campaign continued the following day, in which Phola SAPS members Sergeant Petros Ntuli and Sergeant Nonhlanhla Ntuli, alongside members of the Phola CPF and the Phola Youth Desk, returned to the same centre to again participate in educating about the rights of those living with disabilities.

The event was led by Rachel Nyambi, along with the management of the centre, in collaboration with Genet Mineral Processing, headed by Sibusiso Msibi, who donated groceries.

“Both events were a resounding success, and we believe that through the information that was shared, the lives of those affected will continue to improve,” Ntuli said.
