Clr Sizwe Mathebula brings mobility to Lynnville elderly women
The councillor expressed his determination and commitment to serving the community and assisting wherever there is a need.
Ward 17 councillor Sizwe Mathebula recently handed over wheelchairs to three Lynnville residents who had been struggling to move around for years.
The house visits on September 16 came after the councillor received reports about three physically vulnerable elderly women in their late 90s who struggled to move from one point to another due to a lack of wheelchairs.
“We first received a request from a relative of an old lady who didn’t have a wheelchair,” Mathebula said, adding that two more reports about other elderly women also came in, reported by the ward committee members in the area.
With the help of Thungela Mine, which assisted with the wheelchairs, Mathebula and his team were able to hand over the much-needed wheels to two 98-year-old women and a teenager, all from Lynnville.
“Upon delivery to the third woman, we got informed that she needed assistance with crutches instead of a wheelchair, so we donated the third wheelchair to a teenager in the same household after learning that there was a need,” Mathebula said, adding that he would also arrange to have the crutches delivered later on, as they did have a pair.
The councillor said that though the centre of everything remains service delivery, he is determined and committed to serving the community and assisting wherever there is a need.
“Issues such as potholes, sewerage, water, and electricity are our main preoccupation, but when people reach out to us for help, if we can assist, we will assist,” he said.
