Pedestrian dies on the N4 after being hit by vehicle during a rainy evening

The police advice pedestrians to always put on reflective or bright clothes when walking in the streets at night.

A pedestrian was declared dead on the scene after being hit by a vehicle as he tried to cross the N4 highway on a rainy evening.
According to the police, the officers on duty on the evening of September 28 received a report about a pedestrian accident that had occurred on the N4 road.

Upon arrival at the scene, they were met by a damaged vehicle and a man who alleged that he had been driving in the rain when a person came running, trying to cross the highway.

The man further alleged that after several attempts to dodge the pedestrian, he fell down, and his car went over him.

The officers were then directed to the pedestrian, who they found lying on the side of the road, metres away from the vehicle, in dark clothes.

The emergency service officials who attended the scene declared him dead on the scene.
Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS, says people should avoid walking in the streets at night, and if there happens to be a need, they must always ensure that they wear reflective or bright clothes and practice extra caution, especially if it’s raining.

“To safely cross the road, make sure to avoid distractions and wait for a sufficient break in traffic at a well-lit, designated crossing point,” he said.

He added that before crossing, pedestrians must look both ways multiple times and make eye contact with oncoming drivers to ensure they can see them.
