Armed robbery streak hits the streets of eMalahleni

The police urge the public to stop hitchhiking and be on the lookout for strange cars or people.

A string of armed robberies has hit the streets of eMalahleni, with three separate incidents reported recently.

In the first incident that occurred on November 14, a man told the police that he was hitchhiking to eMalahleni around 17:20 when a car without registration, which had four men inside, stopped to give him a lift. As soon as he got in, things turned sour as he was allegedly pointed with firearms and robbed of his cellphone, cash, and bank card, demanding his banking pin. The man reported that they dropped him soon after that, but fortunately, he managed to get a lift and got to eMalahleni, where he reported the case.

On November 15, another incident occurred in Kwa-Guqa in which, according to the police, a man was on his way to the bus stop in the early hours when he suddenly noticed four men approaching him. One of the men allegedly pointed a firearm at him and started searching him. The robbers made off with the victim’s cellphone, bank cards, and a clock card.

Later that day, another man was robbed at Mahlalela Street in Ackerville by two men who suddenly stopped their car next to him, blocking him from his walk home. The men allegedly pointed a firearm and started searching him, forcefully taking his cellphone.
Investigations into all the cases are underway.

The SAPS advised, “Always be on the lookout for strange cars or people and try to walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, if possible.”

They also stated that people should avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them, but importantly, they must know all emergency numbers in case something happens.
