Armed robbery at Mbali Gaming Hub founder’s home fails to stop his mission
They stole the equipment meant for the community, but they did not steal his purpose.
The founder of Mbali Gaming Hub, Humphrey Gokoane, said he remains determined to continue his work of keeping children away from drugs and crime, despite being the victim of a violent armed robbery.
The incident took place on February 17 at around 10:00 in Empumelelweni. According to Gokoane, he was in his bedroom speaking on the phone when he heard people in the yard.
“I went to check through the kitchen door and saw people leaving. I insulted them, but it was too late,” he said.
Moments later, the robbers broke the locks and forced entry into the house. Gokoanesaid shots were fired outside while two men entered the home, so there were four in total.
“They assaulted me and kept telling me not to look at them,” he said.
The robbers stole three laptops, two PlayStation consoles, two cellphones, a camera, a microphone, headphones, shoes, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Although he said he is recovering physically, Gokoane still suffers from headaches following the attack. He said the incident has affected him emotionally.
“They have taken me back, and it hurts too much,” he said. “But I cannot give up. I have children I take off the streets to prevent them from committing the same crimes. I am fighting not for myself, but for the youngsters.”
Mbali Gaming Hub operates in Kwa-Guqa Extension, Empumelelweni, and Mapule Sindane Primary School, offering a safe after-school space for young people. The initiative focuses on gaming, mentorship, and positive community engagement as a way to steer children away from drugs and criminal activity.
“The gaming hubs are still running,” Gokoane confirmed. “I’m not going to stop. This is another opportunity to help the community.”
A case has been opened with the police, and investigations are ongoing.
