eMalahleni mourns pioneer Joseph ‘Bab’ Manceda’ Mnisi

Joseph Mnisi passed away after decades of serving and supporting the community of eMalahleni.

The Mnisi family in Ackerville is mourning the loss of their beloved patriarch, Joseph Mnisi, who recently passed away.

Commonly known as “Bab’ Manceda”, the trailblazing entrepreneur whose work transformed township commerce and uplifted countless families, died on February 16 and was laid to rest on February 21.

“We are very saddened by his passing, and we will miss him, but he lived his life to the fullest,” said Lesego Mapaila, the deceased’s first great-granddaughter.

The 83-year-old was renowned as one of the first black businessmen in eMalahleni to own a fully-fledged bakery, butchery, and supermarket, which operated successfully from 1980 till 2016.

According to Mapaila, speaking on behalf of the Mnisi family, for three decades, the business has stood as a pillar of the local economy, providing A-grade products comparable to those of major retailers while remaining deeply rooted in community values.

“His legacy also lives on through the beloved and widely remembered bread, ‘sinkwa saka Manceda,’” Mapaila said, adding that communities appreciated him for his proven discipline and dedication.

Beyond commerce, it is said that the late Mnisi created jobs, supported families through credit facilities, and built a space where dignity and opportunity could thrive.

“He was a very simple man, but in his simpleness, he was specific, quality over quantity,” the representative said.

The family shared that they shall remember their loved one as a visionary, provider, and servant of the people.

“Rest peacefully, mkhulu, you have run your race, and you have run it well. We love you, always,” Mapaila said.

The Mnisi family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support shown by the community of eMalahleni during this difficult time.
