Witbank Hospital doctor under investigation after arrest over alleged blood sample tampering

A case of defeating the ends of justice was opened, and he appeared before the court.

Witbank Police has launched an investigation following an incident involving a blood alcohol test conducted at Witbank General Hospital.

According to police, officers had arrested a suspect for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on March 7 and transported the individual to the hospital for the required blood alcohol test.

Police members requested that the blood sample be drawn in their presence, in accordance with standard procedure. During the process, it is alleged that the attending doctor placed the drawn blood sample behind a bucket and attempted to replace it with another blood sample that was already on the table.

A police officer reportedly noticed the action and immediately confronted the doctor regarding the alleged conduct.

Police then confiscated both blood samples and instructed that a new blood sample be drawn from the suspect in their presence to ensure the integrity of the evidence.

Authorities confirmed that the doctor was arrested and a charge of defeating the ends of justice was opened. The matter was brought before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on March 9.

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall said, “The South African Police Service in Witbank emphasized that any attempt to interfere with evidence or obstruct the administration of justice will be dealt with seriously. Investigations into the matter are ongoing,” said Hall.

Meanwhile, the case against the suspect who was initially arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol also remains under investigation.
