eMalahleni’s SMezi becomes a force behind Amapiano’s evolution

SMezi’s vision is to mentor young producers and create opportunities for new talent, ensuring that the next generation of musicians has the support they need.

Steven Zulu Shongwe, widely known as SMezi, is an eMalahleni musician who has built a strong reputation in Amapiano and Afro-soul.

At 32 years old, SMezi is not only a singer but also a producer and the founder of a record label.

According to SMezi, his music is known for mixing soulful melodies with the lively rhythms of Amapiano.

His career started in 2010 when he worked as a backing vocalist for gospel artists under a well-known label. During this time, he had the chance to perform with respected names such as the late Mzayoni and gospel star Sinky Mathe.

These experiences helped him grow as an artist and shaped his approach to music today.

“I have released several songs that have gained popularity. My recent hits include Le Piano, Kgole, and Owakho, while earlier tracks like Izolo, Baba Ngiyabonga, and Amadimoni remain fan favorites,” said SMezi. “My album, The Love of Na Zulu, shows my ability to move across different genres, and my EP, Stop Gender-Based Violence, highlights my commitment to using music to address social issues,” he added.

Recognition has followed his hard work.

He has won the Mzansi Arts and Media Award for Best Afro Pop Artist, received praise for his Amapiano dance album, and earned the Best Promising Award at the Mpumalanga Gospel Awards. Most recently, he has been nominated for Best Amapiano at the Metro FM Music Awards.

Alongside his career, SMezi has a strong partner and collaborator, Palisa Setona, also known as SMezi Kazi.

Smezi emphasises that she plays a central role in his life and music.

His EP SMezi Kazi (Palisa), released in May 2024, was named after her and reflects their shared experiences.

Palisa is also a songwriter and advisor, guiding his lyrics and musical direction. She wrote the track Kebatla Wena on the EP, showing her creative input in his projects.

Beyond his own music, SMezi is focused on helping others. He manages artists in eMalahleni and outside.

His nomination at the Metro FM Music Awards marks another step in a journey that is still unfolding.
