Illegal scrap trade targeted in surprise Emalahleni operation
Municipal crackdown aims to end illegal scrap trade and safeguard essential services.
Scrapyard owners in Emalahleni were caught off guard when the local municipality and the SAPS launched a surprise inspection operation aimed at cracking down on the illegal trade of stolen infrastructure.
The unannounced operation was conducted on March 13 when municipal officials and police inspected the premises and checked compliance documentation to ensure scrapyard operators were conducting business legally.
The inspections form part of the municipality’s ongoing campaign to combat criminal activities and vandalism that continue to disrupt service delivery and damage municipal infrastructure.
Mayor Clr Vusi Nhlapho joined the operation alongside the MMC for Community Services, Clr Sizwe Buthelezi, in a move aimed at sending a strong message that the municipality will not tolerate illegal activities that undermine essential services.
Officials say the operation also served as a warning to businesses that may be involved in the illegal scrap trade. The municipality confirmed that more unannounced inspections will follow as authorities step up efforts to protect municipal infrastructure and ensure businesses comply with the law.
