Fuel frenzy hit eMalahleni

Motorists going on holiday are going to feel the pinch as petrol is going up by R3.06 at midnight.

Petrol prices are set to rise by R3.06 per litre, while diesel will see increases of R7.37 and R7.51 per litre, respectively.

Since this morning, motorists have been queuing at petrol stations to fill their tanks, while diesel depots have seen businesses and farmers lining up since the weekend.

For Emalahleni, this is a significant blow.

The city relies heavily on the transport of coal, and this steep rise is set to alter the local economic landscape.

The agricultural sector has also been hit hard. “I have to start baling, and we simply aren’t getting enough diesel to keep the farm implements running,” one farmer shared in frustration.

While the government has introduced a temporary R3 per litre reduction in the general fuel levy to act as a buffer, businesses in Emalahleni will undoubtedly still feel the sting of these increases.
