Emalahleni woman forced to empty bank account in armed robbery
Police urge the public to avoid walking in the streets at night, and if you must, do so in groups.
Witbank SAPS is investigating an armed robbery in which a woman was snatched off the street and forced to empty her bank account at gunpoint.
According to the police, the incident occurred on May 11 at around 19:30 while she was walking from a garage in Emalahleni.
Her evening took a violent turn when a vehicle suddenly pulled up next to her. The woman said an armed man got out of the white Mercedes-Benz and ordered her to get inside the car, and she complied.
The vehicle, with four men on board, reportedly sped off toward the N4 highway and eventually stopped in a bushy area.
The men reportedly forced the victim out of the car. She said she was then forced at gunpoint to make money transfers from her bank account.
When her bank account had been emptied, it is said that the woman was then given transport money and told to leave the area.
Investigations into the case are underway.
SAPS advised the public against walking alone at night.
“Never walk around alone, and don’t talk to strangers. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people. Walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group, if possible,” was the message from SAPS.
