Arrows fly at HGH as over 200 archery learners gather

Adults and children took aim this past weekend as Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog hosted the latest AGA Mpumalanga archery competition.

The African Genesis Archery (AGA) association of Mpumalanga brought together schools from across the province for an exciting day of archery competition at Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog.

According to Ryk Gagiano, the AGA Mpumalanga president, the event on May 16 saw participation of over 200 learners, showcasing the rapid growth of archery as a school sport.

“Archery is now an official school sport in Mpumalanga, meaning all the schools can now participate,” Ryk said.

The leader said competitions are held about every second week to give learners regular opportunities to compete.

This week’s competition featured participants from primary schools, high schools, and also adults, as Ryk noted that the sport is open to a wide age range.

“Anyone from Grade 3 until 99 years old can compete on this. Everybody uses the same equipment,” he said.

“We would like to invite all the schools in eMalahleni and the surrounding areas to come and join us.”
