Witbank SAPS investigates concealment of birth after foetus found in Siyanqoba sewer

The foetus was discovered by a local resident at the sewer station in the area.

The Witbank SAPS has launched an investigation into a case of concealment of birth after a foetus was discovered in a sewer pump in Siyanqoba.

The incident occurred on June 3.

According to the police, officers were on duty when they were alerted by a local worker at the sewer facility.

The worker reported that he had been performing routine cleaning duties at the pump when he made the shocking discovery.

The foetus was reportedly found with multiple injuries.

The sewer station is believed to service both Pine Ridge and Siyanqoba.

The foetus was subsequently taken to the forensic department for further examination.

Police confirmed that investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Witbank SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau, advised women to avoid illegal termination of pregnancies.

“If you find out that you are pregnant and you don’t want the baby, we kindly advise that you terminate the pregnancy the legal way. If it’s already too late to do so, please wait to give birth and give the child up for adoption. It’s really sad to witness such incidents,” Ratau said.

The city also has the ‘Baby Safe’ initiatives in different areas where they provide a safe, anonymous, and legal alternative for mothers facing crisis pregnancies, aiming to prevent the abandonment of newborns.

Witbank SAPS has urged community members to remain vigilant and to report any information that may assist in the ongoing investigation. To assist the police with the investigation, you can contact Witbank SAPS at 079 891 5570 or 013 655 5052.
