‘Help us!,’ foreign business owners ask police

A large group of foreign business owners went to the Witbank SAPS to request protection after alleged incidents of intimidation.

A large delegation of foreign business owners went to Witbank SAPS to seek police protection.

The merchants gathered on July 11 and said they fear for their lives, and said they are being intimidated and threatened.

“Four shop owners had to empty their shops and close as a group of people entered their shops and threatened that they would loot the shops if the contents were not removed,” said Ajmal Attique, who spoke on behalf of the business owners.

He shared his concern that the incidents of intimidation are increasing in the townships, leaving shop owners fleeing with empty hands.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Mosondo said police visibility has been intensified in the area.

“We also appeal to the spaza shop owners to open cases so that investigations can take place,” he said.
