Don’t just drive – check first: Easter motorists urged to put safety first
Before you hit the road this Easter, authorities say, check your car, check yourself, and don’t take chances with safety.
As thousands prepare to travel this Easter long weekend, Mpumalanga authorities are sending a clear and urgent message: don’t just get in and go; check everything first.
According to the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, the N4, N2, N11, N12, N17, R38, R573, R568, R23, and R581, among others, have historically recorded significant numbers of crashes and fatalities during previous holiday periods.
He stated that these routes will therefore receive heightened attention and analysis, particularly during peak travel times.
The department, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will maintain a visible presence through block patrols and stop-and-check operations throughout the weekend.
As part of road safety education initiatives, rest stops will be provided for motorists travelling across the province.
The department will also engage pedestrians and motorists to enhance awareness of road safety. In addition, alcohol-related enforcement operations will be intensified throughout the Easter long weekend.
Furthermore, roadblocks will be implemented on identified routes to address vehicles that are not roadworthy.
MEC Macie has urged motorists traveling during the long weekend to comply with traffic regulations and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on their journeys.
“Let us all comply with the rules of the road, exercise tolerance towards fellow motorists, remain vigilant for pedestrians, and refrain from consuming intoxicating substances while driving.
Motorists are further advised to adjust their driving to prevailing road conditions, including inclement weather and construction zones on various routes. Organisers of church pilgrimages must ensure that vehicles used to transport congregants are in a roadworthy condition,” the MEC said.
Law enforcement officers have been instructed to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations throughout the Easter period.
