Justice served as relatives jailed for teen’s kidnapping and extortion in Ga-Nala

A 13-year-old girl whose life was put on the line and who was exposed to a traumatic ordeal at the hands of individuals who included relatives now has the perpetrators behind bars.

A 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped by relatives has seen justice served after seven accused were sentenced to a combined 28 years’ direct imprisonment.
The four women and three men were each handed four-year prison sentences on April 1 following their conviction.

The case stems from a kidnapping that took place on July 22, 2024, in Ga-Nala.
According to the Hawks, the victim was abducted by a group that included siblings Dineo (44) and Dumisani Zondo (34), alongside Nelisiwe Mkhwanazi (33) and Caleb Sebatane (25).

Investigators said the group transported the victim in a white Toyota Starlet before taking her to Vosloorus, where she was held in a shack.

The Zondo siblings were later found guarding the child.

The seven accused of kidnapping a minor in Ga-Nala.

Three additional accused Thabang Mndebele (47), Patricia Mkhize (44), and Emelda Nkosi (40) joined the group and participated in demanding a ransom of R200 000 from the victim’s mother, threatening to kill the child if the money was not paid.

The victim’s mother made several payments following the threats.
A breakthrough in the case came when Sebatane and Mndebele were arrested at a shopping mall in Vereeniging while attempting to withdraw money believed to be part of the ransom.

Police recovered R9 000 in cash and linked the suspects to the vehicle used in the kidnapping.
Further investigations led police to the Vosloorus informal settlement, where the victim was found unharmed.
