Here’s why you’re seeing dry taps in Emalahleni
Low reservoir levels, maintenance work, and system disruptions are behind dry taps in Emalahleni.
Residents across Emalahleni Local Municipality are being urged to brace for continued water supply challenges, as the municipality explains the key reasons behind ongoing dry taps in several areas.
In its latest update issued, the municipality pointed to critically low storage levels at Point D as a primary factor affecting supply.
Officials said the reservoir is currently unable to feed all areas adequately, placing strain on the system.
Compounding the issue is ongoing maintenance at a larger reservoir, which has reduced the municipality’s ability to stabilise water levels when disruptions occur.
“When we experience a shock to the system, such as power outages or other issues, it becomes very difficult to optimise the storage again,” the municipality statement outlined.
The municipality also highlighted infrastructure instability as a contributing factor. In areas such as Reyno Ridge, attempts to boost water supply have resulted in pipe bursts, forcing engineers to consider rerouting parts of the network to prevent further damage.
These combined challenges, low storage capacity, maintenance work, and system disruptions have made it difficult to maintain consistent water pressure, leaving many households experiencing low flow or no water at all.

While technical teams continue with investigations and interventions, the municipality has not provided a timeline for when normal supply will be restored.
Officials have apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to residents for patience as efforts to stabilise the system continue.
